Keen, Newman and McCulloch met each other for the first time in December 1968 or January 1969 at Townshend's home studio to record "Something in the Air". Keen wrote the opening track on The Who Sell Out album, "Armenia City in the Sky". In 1969, Townshend created the band to showcase songs written by the former Who chauffeur, drummer/ singer/ guitarist Speedy Keen. They recorded and released an album in 2010 titled Beyond Hollywood. The lineup of the band was Andy Newman, Mark Brzezicki, Nick Johnson, Josh Townshend and Tony Stubbings. The most current Thunderclap Newman group was formed in February 2010 at the instigation of music business manager Ian Grant. The band folded in April 1971 but was resurrected by Andy Newman with a new group in 2010. The band augmented its personnel during its tours: in 1969 with James "Jim" Pitman-Avery (bass guitar) and Jack McCulloch (drums). Pete Townshend (using the alias "Bijou Drains") played bass guitar on their album and singles, all of which he had recorded and produced at the IBC Studio and his Twickenham home studio. The band released a critically acclaimed rock album, Hollywood Dream, and three other singles (which appeared on the album), "Accidents", "The Reason" and "Wild Country".įrom 1969 until 1971, the nucleus of the band consisted of the songwriter John "Speedy" Keen (vocals, drums, guitar), Andy "Thunderclap" Newman (piano) and Jimmy McCulloch (guitar). Their single, " Something in the Air", a 1969 UK number one hit, remains in demand for television commercials, film soundtracks and compilations. Thunderclap Newman were an English rock band that Pete Townshend of the Who and Kit Lambert formed in 1969 in a bid to showcase the talents of John "Speedy" Keen, Jimmy McCulloch, and Andy "Thunderclap" Newman. “For a jazz pianist, the mastery entails a staggering breadth of knowledge about harmony, rhythm and orchestration, all converging in an eloquent synthesis. Veteran New York Times jazz critic Nate Chinen wrote a profile about him in 2015: “Jazz prodigies rarely have full command of their artistry,” he wrote. One of his online bios states “ Not many jazz musicians can boast three GRAMMY Award nominations before age 16″ and “At only 10 years old, he was hand-picked to mentor under jazz heavyweight Wynton Marsalis.” At the age of 11, a year before the 60 Minutes special, Alexander had dazzled crowds at the Montreal and Newport Jazz Festivals. Of course, at that point in his career, the focus was almost always on his youth. When reminded of the clip earlier this week in an interview with Postmedia, the now 19-year-old pianist says he has fond memories of the interview and spending the day with Cooper and Marsalis. “No one has ever seen a person play with that type of sophistication harmonically, knowledge of the music, and the type of formed identity to invent something cohesive in the context of (that) time,” Marsalis says, as young Joey sits in silence. "He could take on any kind of story - interview presidents, investigate drug dealers in China, and then do a lovely, lyric feature story that was just as charming as it could possibly be." Pelley's profile of Alma, which Anderson produced, has been an audience favorite each time it re-airs. That prodigy was Alma Deutscher, a young girl who was playing piano and violin by the time she was three years old and wrote her first opera when she was 10. One day he would be in Hong Kong covering protests, and on another day, he was outside London, in the home of a musical prodigy. Other times, he was covering politics, producing an interview with then-Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump or former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan. Sometimes he covered space, producing pieces on the Hubble Space Telescope and NASA's "Curiosity" rover. One aspect of Anderson's producing that made him so integral to 60 Minutes was his seemingly limitless range. Once the investigator was able to find the father, Anderson tracked him to a grocery store that he frequented, then surprised him as he left, filming the entire encounter.Ħ0 Minutes Archives: Alma Deutscher, British music prodigy 13:09 Once in Shanghai, Anderson hired a private investigator to track down the duo. The song was recorded on 11 June 1968 at EMI's Abbey Road Studios in London, with George Martin as the producer and Geoff Emerick as the audio engineer. "Blackbird" includes the sound of a male common blackbird singing Manson interpreted the lyrics as a call to black Americans to wage war on their white counterparts, and instructed his followers to commit a series of murders in Los Angeles in August 1969 to trigger such a conflict. Īlong with McCartney's " Helter Skelter", "Blackbird" was one of several White Album songs that Charles Manson interpreted as the Beatles' prophecy of an apocalyptic race war that would lead to him and his " Family" of followers ruling the US on countercultural principles. However, during an informal rehearsal at EMI Studios on 22 November 1968, before he and Donovan took part in a Mary Hopkin recording session, McCartney played "Blackbird", telling Donovan that he wrote it after having "read something in the paper about the riots" and that he meant the black "bird" to symbolise a black woman. Writing in the 1990s, Ian MacDonald noted the theory that "Blackbird" was intended as "a metaphor for the black civil rights struggle", but pointed to the composition's romantic qualities, arguing that the early-morning bird song "translates … into a succinct metaphor for awakening on a deeper level". Īlthough McCartney has been consistent in the meaning, there are still varied interpretations – as a nature song, a message in support of the Black Power movement, or a love song. Angie recalled that McCartney visited the house and sat at Edith's bedside, where Edith told him that she would listen to a bird singing at night. His stepmother, Angie McCartney, has claimed that McCartney wrote it for her elderly mother, Edith Stopforth, who was staying at Jim McCartney's house while recovering from a long illness. In 2018, McCartney further elaborated on the song's meaning, explaining that "blackbird" should be interpreted as "black girl", in the context of the civil rights troubles in southern 1960s US. It's not really about a blackbird whose wings are broken, you know, it's a bit more symbolic. I had been doing some in the last year or so because I've got a poetry book out called Blackbird Singing, and when I would read "Blackbird", I would always try and think of some explanation to tell the people … So, I was doing explanations, and I actually just remembered why I'd written "Blackbird", you know, that I'd been, I was in Scotland playing on my guitar, and I remembered this whole idea of "you were only waiting for this moment to arise" was about, you know, the black people's struggle in the southern states, and I was using the symbolism of a blackbird. In May 2002, following a show in Dallas, Texas, McCartney discussed the song with KCRW DJ Chris Douridas, saying: He has said that he was inspired by hearing the call of a blackbird one morning when the Beatles were studying Transcendental Meditation in Rishikesh, India and also writing it in Scotland as a response to racial tensions escalating in the United States during the spring of 1968. Since composing "Blackbird" in 1968, McCartney has given various statements regarding both his inspiration for the song and its meaning. The first night his future wife Linda Eastman stayed at his home, McCartney played "Blackbird" for the fans camped outside his house. McCartney adapted a segment of the Bourrée (reharmonised into the original's relative major key of G) as the opening of "Blackbird", and carried the musical idea throughout the song. The Bourrée is distinguished by melody and bass notes played simultaneously on the upper and lower strings. As teenagers, he and George Harrison tried to learn Bourrée as a "show off" piece. McCartney explained on Chaos and Creation at Abbey Road, aired in 2005, that the guitar accompaniment for "Blackbird" was inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach's Bourrée in E minor, a well-known lute piece, often played on the classical guitar. Problems playing this file? See media help. Getting the negatives out of the way first, the Pixel screen is significantly smaller than most monitors or televisions. There are some tradeoffs in this configuration. In the Stadia app the user can choose to stream the game to either the Chromecast attached TV or their phone, which currently requires the user to plug in the controller to the Pixel with the USB-C cable. Currently, this mode is only supported on Google Pixel but there are plans to bring it to iOS in 2020. In addition to being able to stream Stadia to any TV or monitor users can also play it these games in mobile mode. To name a few of the 44 known titles that are either available or coming to Stadia, there is Baldur’s Gate III, Darksiders Genesis, Destiny 2, Doom Eternal, The Elder Scrolls Online, Metro Exodus, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Samurai Showdown. But even if the library is composed of titles available on other platforms there are quite a few good ones from which to choose. There several worthwhile titles available but not too many games are worthy of a second purchase. The game library for Stadia is impressive with some major publishers on board but that statement comes with a caveat: with the exception of GYLT, the lone Stadia exclusive title, everything in the library is a previously-released game. Travel WiFi was less consistent depending on present location but at home it was perfect about 85 percent of the time, playable but stuttering 10 percent and 5 percent of the time it was a crashtastic unplayable mess. There were only a couple times when the games slowed to an unplayable pace but this is something that can happen with streaming services. Multiplayer worked well too even if all the online multiplayer features weren’t available during the pre-launch period. This did hinder gameplay some but the I could still enjoy the games with only some minor hiccups at their performance. Using free hotel WiFi had the games stuttering quite a bit but after lowering some setting things ran more smoothly. Taking the Stadia on the road and using different WiFi connections had varying results. Most of the time playing at home I was able to explore tombs without issue and flawlessly execute every multiple hit kombo that ended in fatality. During the pre-launch period only a limited number of people had a Stadia unit so the connectivity strength may falter more often. What was impressive is taking games with detailed visuals such as Mortal Kombat 11 and Shadow of the Tomb Raider and have them stream without any noticeable lag or framerate issues most of the time. None of the games I had access to during the pre-launch period were games I owned on other platforms so unfortunately there couldn’t be any comparing and contrasting but what was played looked how I imagine it would on the other platforms. Games can be purchased through the store on the Stadia app or Stadia website and then can be played.Īctually getting into the games, the initial thoughts were this is a rather impressive system with 22 games available at launch. Using the Google Home app sync TV and Chromecast and then use the app to connect sync the controller to the TV or monitor. It’s advisable to set up a Gmail account and download the Google Home and Google Stadia apps to your smartphone or tablet. Initial set up for the Stadia is a bit more involved than with a traditional console as it doesn’t really have any hardware to speak of outside of a controller and a Chromecast Ultra. Some of the issues encountered during pre-launch play may have been addressed by the time the Stadia gets its retail release or at least soon after. After spending some time with the new gaming platform it became apparent that there’s a lot of potential with the Stadia and it was easy to picture it getting a lot of regular use with a library of AAA titles like Borderlands 3 alongside indie titles like Kine. This mentality is being shared because it’s a sign of character growth and personal development when a person can publicly admit they are mistaken. Despite enjoying streaming services for movies and music the idea of streaming video games just didn’t have much personal appeal, which meant that the announcement of Google’s Stadia was met with apathy. Any time I have to stop moving and rotate step by step 45 degrees at a time (trying to do that while moving is disorienting for me not in a sick-making way, but more of a "which way am I going now?" way) feels like a failure of level design-most of the game I can actually just press forward and look where I want to go and get there smoothly and without trouble or nausea, and I love it. I personally find that much more comfortable than straight right-stick-to-rotate, and distinctly better than the rotate-45-degrees-per-move thing HTL does, though that's definitely an improvement over traditional 2-stick navigation. (Note: I've only played Here They Lie, of the 3 you mentioned.) Is it that, when you're in forward motion and turn your head, your direction of motion gradually adjusts to point the direction you're looking? I'm not entirely understanding which part of the control scheme you have trouble with. I need to be able to walk forward and look freely around with my head, but instead, these games use head turning, which is a no no for me. It's the weird controls that these games have that make me sick.
Russia’s allies France and Britain, which were allied with Japan, signed their own agreement in 1904 to avoid being pulled into the war. The resulting war, fought both at sea and on land in China, was won by the Japanese, and as Beiriger notes, it helped shift power the power balance in Europe. The Japanese saw Russia’s rising aggressiveness as a menace and launched a surprise attack on Nicholas’ fleet at Port Arthur in China. Russia’s Czar Nicholas II wanted to obtain a port that gave his navy and commercial ships access to the Pacific, and he set his sites on Korea. “They ended up alienating both the government and public of Britain prior to the war.” 3. “The German Naval Laws created unintended consequences,” Beiriger says in an email. Instead, the British responded by building even more ships, and by ending their late 1880s policy of “splendid isolation” to form alliances with Japan, France and Russia. “Tirpitz aimed at forcing Britain into an alliance with Germany on German terms,” explains Eugene Beiriger, an associate professor of history, peace, justice and conflict studies at DePaul University, and author of the 2018 book World War I: A Historical Exploration of Literature. It was the first of five laws dictating a buildup in which the Germans envisioned building a force that was superior to Britain’s Royal Navy. This legislation, advocated by Germany’s newly-appointed Secretary of the Imperial Navy, Admiral Alfred von Tirpitz, dramatically expanded the size of Germany’s battle fleet. “The alliance system was critical to shaping the war, and even in helping bring it on: it created a set of expectations about international rivalry and competition, determining what kind of war Europeans imagined and prepared for.” Fogarty, an associate professor of history at University at Albany, explains. “To my mind, it is the coming together of the Triple Entente in stages-the Franco-Russian Alliance in 1894, the British-French Entente Cordiale of 1904, and the Anglo-Russian Entente of 1907-that really solidified the system of diplomatic agreements that formed the main antagonistic blocs that went to war in 1914,” Richard S. It was the start of what would become the Allied side, the Triple Entente, in World War I. So the two nations decided to join forces for mutual protection as well. Franco-Russian Alliance (1894)īoth Russia and France, which had been humiliated in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, feared the rising power of Germany, which had already formed alliances with Austria-Hungary and Italy. Here are eight of the events that led to the war. “Which may be, in the end, the best explanation for why it did.” “No one can say precisely why it happened,” explains the narration to a film at the National World War I Museum and Memorial in Kansas City. The path to war included plenty of miscalculations and actions that turned out to have unforeseen consequences. But historians say that World War I actually was the culmination of a long series of events, stretching back to the late 1800s. The event that sparked the conflagration was the assassination of the heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, in 1914. Long after the last shot had been fired, the political turmoil and social upheaval continued, and ultimately led to another, even bigger and bloodier global conflict two decades later. It also radically altered the map, leading to the collapse of the sprawling Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman and Russian empires that had existed for centuries, and the formation of new nations to take their place. The result was some of the most horrific carnage the world had ever seen, with more than 16 million military personnel and civilians losing their lives. World War I, which lasted from 1914 until 1918, introduced the world to the horrors of trench warfare and lethal new technologies such as poison gas and tanks.
